Only the strong lock
PDF offers four ways of locking a file and three of them are broken — the oldest can be picked in minutes on an ordinary laptop. This tool reads all four, because old files exist and people need them opened. It will only ever write the strongest one, AES-256. A lock that is known not to hold is worse than no lock at all, because the person walks away believing they are safe.
Nobody can recover your password
Not us, not anyone. There is no copy of it and no way back into the file without it. That is what makes the lock worth having, and it is worth saying out loud before you rely on it.
What the permissions are worth
Being honest: not much. "Do not allow printing" is a request written into the file, and any reader is free to ignore it — plenty do. It is written because the format expects it, not because it stops anyone. The password is the part that actually protects the document.
