What to draw
JPG or PNG
JPG makes much smaller files and is the right choice for a scan or anything with photographs in it. PNG keeps every line exactly as drawn, which suits pages that are mostly text, diagrams or a logo — at several times the size.
How large
150 dots per inch is comfortable to read on a screen and is what most people want. 200 is sharper and roughly twice the size. Above that an ordinary phone starts to run out of memory partway through, so this stops there rather than failing halfway with nothing to show for it.
Several pages
One page is saved as a picture. More than one arrives as a zip, so your browser asks once instead of thirty times. The pages are numbered in order, so they stay in order wherever you unpack them.
What it cannot do
Password-protected files are refused rather than guessed at — unlock it first. And this draws a picture of the page, so the words in it stop being words: they cannot be selected, copied or searched afterwards. If that matters, keep the PDF.
